Welcome to Update.

What is Update?

Update is the most comprehensive source of information about the marginal, weird, electronic and experimental music that is being made and performed in Scotland at the moment.

You can use the listings above to find out about marginal music artists, labels, promoters and other organisations. You can also submit your own entry to the listings. Finally, you can use our unique and comprehensive events guide to find out about all of the relevant events that are taking place in Scotland over the next few weeks. If you're in Scotland and you like odd music, the guide should be of use to you.

We also run a bi-monthly event, called LONG+WRONG, at which we play records. The next one will be in the Autumn.

We are also involved with making a film about people who make experimental/noisy/abstract music and sound in Scotland. We have just finished a series of 24 interviews and are aiming to launch the film later this year. Our intention is to make a film that your mum could watch, enjoy and gain some insight from. Details about the film will be circulated here, through the events guide email list and via our facebook page.

Update is a non-profit organisation.

Update Scotland - Scotland's Marginal Music on Facebook

Here's our myspace.

Why did you create this site?

There are well established means by which people can find out about or promote indie, dance, metal, traditional, etc., music in Scotland. But what about all of the music that resists classification, that comes from a set of traditions that are not so widely shared, or which is just plain weird? This website brings together all of the people in Scotland who spend their time making, listening to, promoting, selling, teaching, and inquiring about this music that doesn't quite fit anywhere else.

What do you mean by 'marginal'?

Although Update tries to avoid explicit definitions, the following approaches are examples of the kind thing we're talking about: ambient, breakcore, contemporary classical, dark ambient, doom, drone, electro-acoustic composition, electronica, experimental, free improvisation, free jazz, IDM, improv, math rock, minimalism, new weird folk, noise, post rock, power electronics, punk-primitive, sound art, etc.
